Looking for easy detoxing recipes for green smoothies that you can have for breakfast? Drinking this detox green smoothie full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory foods on a daily basis will make you feel better than ever! It’s rich in fiber, essential vitamins and minerals, as well as healthy omega-3.

Fine, I’ll admit it, the title is pretty shady and I also optimized the heck out of that intro, so that people can find the recipe when they look for detox green smoothies. Like, I know. But I’m willing to do it, because I want people to read the content in this blog post and to make the green smoothie. That’s my goal.

Is There Such Thing As Detox Foods?

Also, everything I said it’s very much true. Will this simple green smoothie support your liver and other organs in cleansing and detoxing your body more efficiently? Yes, it will.

Will the smoothie do it on its own without a liver? No, it won’t. So, let’s not be stupid.

Let’s also not come up with dumb excuses and reasons not to eat something green or drink a green smoothie that can actually help your body function better.

Let’s not come up with excuses to eat pizza and burgers and doughnuts, just because your body can “handle it”. You can’t eat crap and expect your body to be the superhero and clean up all the mess on its own.

“There’s no such thing as detox food, you have a liver.” Oh, thanks health expert on the internet who’s helped nobody ever!

I know my liver’s pretty good at detoxing my body, but when you’re only feeding it fake food, guess what? It won’t be that good at it. Because it will be exhausted and overwhelmed. And nobody does a good job when they’re exhausted and overwhelmed. Things slip through the cracks. Get forgotten. And when it comes to health – we can’t afford that.

There are certain chemicals in food that can make your liver produce more detoxifying enzymes, most people just don’t know about them.

I typed that real fast too. I can hold a conversation and have a whole discussion in my head for a looong time. It’s a good thing.

So, basically, this is a healthy green smoothie recipe and it’s good for you and you should drink one or two a day to stay healthy. Support your body at what it is good at – cleansing and recovering itself. Mkay?

How This Detox Smoothie Came Into The World

I was inspired to make some detox green smoothies for breakfast and snacks after watching an interview on Youtube with Dr. Brooke Goldner. I had never heard of her before, but she’s amazing. Just such a wonderful person and has a fascinating story about how she cured lupus eating a certain way.

She basically, confirmed everything I believed after doing a ton of research on inflammation and diet. That we need to improve the omega-3/omega-6 ratio and load up on healing phytochemicals. And I knew it, yet somehow I could never put it together. But she did and she cured her autoimmune disease decades ago and is now helping others do the same.

So what she recommends are three things: 1) lots of greens and raw cruciferous vegetables, 2) lots of plant-based omega-3’s (so flaxseed, chia seeds or flax oil) and 3) a lot of water. The easiest way to get those into your system? Drink green smoothies and lots of them every day!

Detox Green Smoothie Ingredients

So now, let’s take a look at the ingredients of this detoxing green smoothie and the benefits they bring to the body.

Kale. I know, I’m not the biggest fan of kale in smoothies either. Kale’s a bit more bitter than spinach, and you notice it, especially in green smoothies. But, kale’s also super rich in glucosinolates. Glucosinolates are molecules found in cruciferous vegetables like kale that can be activated into isothiocyanates – those are the detoxing masters themselves (source). The benefits of isothiocyanates to the human body are fascinating! When it comes to detox, the one thing they do is activate Phase II detox enzymes in the liver. These detox enzymes then transform harmful molecules like carcinogens, toxins and mutagens that have been found in the body into non-harmful molecules. Then the body can safely get rid of them. Cinnamon. Cinnamon has basically the perfect aroma and is one of the many herbs and spices that deliver incredible health benefits. Among other things, cinnamon has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-diabetic potential. (source)

Ginger. I love ginger, especially in smoothies and soups! It comes with so many health benefits like reducing inflammation, helping with colds and preventing chronic diseases like cancer, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative. (source)

Flax oil. You can also use flaxseed or chia seeds here. This is our source of anti-inflammatory omega-3s in this green detox smoothie. We all have heard that the plant-based omega-3s (ALA) can’t be used in the body. But guess what? When you get enough of them on a regular basis, while simultaneously reducing the amount of omega-6 (LA) this will change (source). So use more chia and flaxseeds in your diet – they have a lot of omega-3s and not that many omega-6s.

Fruit. I used half a frozen banana and a pear to make the smoothie sweeter. Dr. Goldner says to not add a lot of fruit, so if you want – try the smoothie with less fruit if you think you can handle it!

How To Make It

Finally, it’s time to make one of the easiest, healthiest green smoothies ever! All you need to do now is:

  • Get all the ingredients out. Wash the kale and the pear, grate the ginger.
  • Add everything to your blender and fill the blender cup to about halfway with drinking water.
  • Blend until smooth!

Then it’s time to drink and enjoy your smoothie for breakfast or a snack…Whenever you want! Maybe make another one in a few hours again.

Detox Green Smoothie Options

If you don’t like an ingredient in the green smoothie recipe, you can definitely switch things up. Here are some options:

  • Greens: You can use spinach too. While it’s not a cruciferous vegetable, spinach is rich in antioxidants and essential vitamins and is a wonderfully healthy food.
  • Omega-3’s: Here you can choose between flaxseed or chia seeds.
  • Fruit: You can definitely use other fruit as well – some frozen mango or pineapple instead of the banana and an apple instead of the pear are the things that come up to mind first!
