If you want to grow your blog, here are 5 types of blog posts that can help you increase your blog traffic fast.

Aaaand I thought writing about what I ate in a day will make millions of people come to my blog, read my stuff and just love me forever.

(How did I not turn out to be a narcissist when I took that personality test is a mystery to me).

Well now I know: If you want people to come to your blog, read your stuff and care about who you actually are – you need to give them something they want.

The type of content that will drive the most traffic to your blog is simple, easy and actionable.

Most of all, your content solves a common BURNING problem.

The Key To Creating Viral Posts

No matter what you blog about, writing viral posts is mostly about creating great content. I know. But it’s true. By doing so people who come once are more likely to share your blog with others and to come back in the future.

Grammar is unquestionably HUGE when it comes to blogging and you shouldn’t ignore it either. Put the commas where they need to be, don’t use the same keyword 30 times throughout your article (Google is also not a fan of that) and stop writing “your” instead of “you’re”.

I’m not saying I’m not making these mistakes myself, I’m human and I’m not a genius, but I recently started using Grammarly and it’s such a relief. Especially when I’m batching content – I can’t seem to see my own mistakes, but having Grammarly installed helps a lot! If you want to try for yourself – you can start out with the free plan.

As for what to write, here are 5 types of posts to write every month, so that your blog goes viral.

1. Lists

I love lists. Lists do well. They do because they give you options.

They hold a promise that if one of the options doesn’t work for you, some of them will. So my chances of a post solving my problem are HIGHER, the more options I have on that list.

For example, if I need stock photos and find a list of 10 free stock photo sites online – I will click.

Even if I know most of these sites, I would check out the article anyway, because I might find a new site that could be a better match for my needs.

Just keep this in mind: people look online for ideas, rarely FACTS.

Ideas that help you solve a problem.

For example, I wrote a blog post I found super fascinating about the health benefits of eating more fruits and vegetables and how they could even make you smarter. That post took me super long to research and write. But, people didn’t really care about it. Everyone knows they need to eat fruits and vegetables. Now, that post was a list, but it wasn’t something people needed. As a result, it didn’t have many shares (not for the lack of promotion).

On the contrary I wrote a list blog post about 5 anti-inflammatory foods you need to eat daily and it gets lots of shares and views.


Well, if you struggle with inflammation and see this post in your search results, you’re gonna want to know what these foods are. And you’ll click through.

They might be the DIRECT solution to your problem.

A reason why you should eat fruits and vegetables unfortunately isn’t.

Good types of list posts would be:

  • foods to eat to lose weight
  • tips to grow your traffic
  • jobs to make money fast
  • essentials for a newborn
  • products or natural remedies to get rid of acne
  • things to do when you’re bored or sad.

2. Roundups

Similar to lists – a roundup is a collection of online resources (think blog posts, videos or pictures), that help solve a problem/help the reader do something she wants to do.

Some of my most successful posts are roundups of workouts. I am not very committed to filming myself while I work out (not only because my face gets red like a tomato), so I just make lists of workouts I’ve tried and loved.

3. Ultimate Guide

Now an ultimate guide is the mother of helpful and useful posts. It’s a monster of an article.

Not just a simple how-to – it’s an article that teaches you EVERYTHING you need to know about a certain topic.

For example, if you write an ultimate guide on how to use Pinterest for traffic, you don’t just write tips like pin consistently, be friendly, schedule and pin 50/50. You explain EVERYTHING so that the reader doesn’t need to go anywhere else. You start with how to create a Pinterest business profile, then creating pins, what kind of pins do well on Pinterest (you give examples), you tell them how to upload those pins, where to add alt text, when to pin, where and so on. You go deep.

Another example would be if I write the ultimate guide on eating clean – I will not just include what foods to eat and how you need to prep, but how to stock your pantry, your fridge, how often to eat, which plates to use, mental “hacks” (I hate this word), what to have for breakfast, lunch, dinner and a couple of recipes to start.

I haven’t yet written an article like this, because I haven’t found the time, but it’s definitely on my messy to-do list. Because I know, if done well, these ultimate guides can get traffic for years to come.

4. How To/ Step by Step (incl. Recipe / Workout)

This one is really a no brainer. Just think of how often you look online for tips on how to do something. A recipe, a workout or a tutorial to do anything. Like always, the more helpful and detailed you go, the better.

Don’t overcomplicate things, make it easy for the reader to take action.

A great goal to have when writing a post is to help your reader do something.

One of my popular recipes is this quinoa with tomatoes. I seriously made it in 10 minutes without even planning to take a picture or post it. But it was so easy and so good, that I wrote down the recipe and posted it online. It turned out to be a hit.

5. Personal journey/transformation/experience that solved your problem

With so many generic tips online, there’s one thing that proves to always stay current and helpful: The experience of someone else.

Tips from others who succeeded, or tried something you intend to try, work very well.

I don’t write many articles about my personal journey and I think it’s a big mistake. It’s definitely on my list.

The one thing you need to keep in mind when writing based on your experience: BE HONEST and helpful.

Don’t focus so much on promoting products as on telling the truth. Sure if you used a product that solved a particular problem, definitely mention it.
